The Principle of Fahm al-Siyaq in Ushul al-Tafsir and Its Implementation in the Exegesis of Verses Concerning Jihad

Abstract

The study of the interpretation of the Qur'an requires a thorough understanding of the context of the verses, both from linguistic, thematic, and historical aspects. One of the important rules in ushul al-tafsir that emphasizes the importance of context is fahm al-siyaq, which is the understanding of verses based on their relationship with the previous verses, the aftermath, and the major themes being discussed. This rule is very important to avoid misinterpretations that can occur if a verse is understood partially or literally without considering the overall context. The importance of this approach is very evident in interpreting jihad verses, which are often misused by certain groups for political or ideological purposes. A dismembered and out-of-context understanding has contributed to the emergence of radical interpretations that are incompatible with the universal values of Islam. This research aims to explain the concept of fahm al-siyaq in the tradition of ushul al-tafsir and show its application in interpreting jihad verses. By using qualitative approaches and literature study methods as well as content analysis of relevant journals, this study shows that the application of the principles of fahm al-siyaq results in a more comprehensive, fair, and moderate understanding. This rule makes an important contribution to the development of an inclusive and humanist interpretation of the Qur'an, as well as being relevant to answer the challenges of diversity and socio-religious complexity in the contemporary era.
